Does God Grow Weary?
64
Weariness would not be a characteristic most people would say of God. It is true that He does not become physically tired or weary as we do and need sleep and rest to recover, but there is a weariness that He can show and we should hope we don't see it or hear of it in our lives.
In Malachi 2:17 it states we could weary Him with our words. How? "You do it when by your actions you say, everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord and He delights in them. Or (by asking) where is the God of justice." God was tired of the way the people had twisted His truths. He would punish those who insisted that because God was silent, He approved of their actions or would not punish them. By so believing this or even teaching this, they were perverting God's character to something He is not. ("For I am the Lord, I do not change..." Malachi 3:6). There comes a point with God (who is long suffering and patient) when He has been provoked so often that He will no longer tolerate it.
God wearies of our sins! In Isaiah 43:22-24, the people presented God with sins instead of sacrifices. In the Old Testament, a sacrifice required both giving up a valuable animal and pleading with God for forgiveness. They tired God with their disobedience. God is so patient with us but there is a point of limitation to that patience. These people were apparently coming before the Lord to worship but that worship was not recognized because they themselves had become weary of doing what was required.
What a lesson for us today. Are we week after week, and day after day going through the motions but not doing what is required first? Is there any sin/disobedience in our lives that we need to bring them before Him and humble ourselves in repentance asking for His forgivenss? He can become weary of our words, our failed promises to Him, our lack of complete obedience. He is looking for action (a doer of the Word). He will not accept or recognize anything from us but will eventually become weary of it with anything less than that. Let us not go that far!
